The 22nd session of the Union’s General Assembly convenes in Cairo

The Union held the 22nd session of its General Assembly at the headquarters of the Council of Arab Economic Unity in Cairo.

The Arab Union for Combating Forgery and Counterfeiting held the 22nd session of its General Assembly at the headquarters of the Council of Arab Economic Unity in Cairo.

Opening the meeting, Ambassador Mohammadi Ahmed Al-Ni, Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Economic Unity, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Mr Mohamed Hamdi, the Council’s officer for the specialised unions, praised the Union’s growing efforts against forgery and counterfeiting in the Arab countries and wished it continued success in supporting joint Arab action.

Ambassador Ahmed Abbas Al-Hasani, President of the Union, highlighted the hard work of the past year and announced that the session would discuss major projects, including a forensic research laboratory serving the whole Arab world and laboratories dedicated to criminal evidence and to combating pharmaceutical and food fraud. A year after the current board took office, he said, the foundation stone has been laid for an institution that adds real value to the fight against forgery, counterfeiting, money laundering and terrorism. The accompanying seminar brought together leading experts and scholars in these fields.

Mr Hassan Mohamed Hassan, Vice-President, noted that in a single year the Union had adopted a new structure, elected the members of its General Assembly and set out a clear training plan delivered by specialised experts. Dr Abeer El-Essawy, Secretary-General, approved the agenda and chaired the proceedings, during which the Union’s committees were formed: the Scientific and Training Committee chaired by Major General Ibrahim Gaber; the Legal Affairs Committee chaired by Counsellor Hassan Mohamed Hassan with Dr Abu Bakr El-Deeb, Dr Essam El-Derozi, Counsellor Ayman Amer and Counsellor Hossam Mazen; the Economic Committee; the Media and Public Relations Committee; the Cybersecurity Committee chaired by Dr Mohamed El-Zawahry; and the External Relations Committee.

The Union operates under the umbrella of the Council of Arab Economic Unity of the League of Arab States. It conducts research and studies, issues recommendations, connects members with specialised Arab and international expertise, supports members’ technical information needs, studies the harmonisation of anti-forgery legislation across the Arab states, and helps members access modern technology and technical support.
